How to build bee hotels

IN celebration of World Bee Day on Tuesday (May 20), Landcare Broken Hill will be running a workshop at Imperial Lakes Nature Park to teach residents how to build a bee hotel to install in their gardens.

Imperial Lakes Nature Park is a nature reserve just outside of Broken Hill that is in the process of being restored after being purchased from Essential Water.

Local Landcare co-ordinator Selen Nazmiye Bilal said the event is all about simple, creative ways to support biodiversity.

“Australia has over 1700 native bee species, and many live right here in Broken Hill,” she said.

“Building bee hotels helps protect these vital pollinators in our arid environment.”

Bees are vital for maintaining healthy ecosystems thanks to their role as pollinators, ensuring plant reproduction and supporting biodiversity and food production.

Using recycled and natural materials, participants will build their own take-home bee hotel and enjoy a Bee Morning Tea.

The workshop is free for Landcare members or joining non-members can join on the day for just $22 per year and gain free access to all upcoming events.
