Algae alert still in place

A RED alert warning for high levels of potentially toxic blue-green algae in the Darling-Baaka River remains in place for Wilcannia.

Amber alerts for algae have been issued for Caulpaulin and Trevallyn, indicating blue-green algae may be multiplying in the water and people are advised to exercise caution in these areas.

Satellite imagery has revealed that the algae bloom had migrated downstream towards Lake Wetherell in the Menindee Lakes, and therefore people in the area are advised to refrain from eating fish, use alternative water supplies, and keep dogs and stock away from the water and provide alternative watering points.

There are amber alerts for algae in place for the Darling-Baaka at Menindee Weir, and the Menindee Lakes at Lake Wetherell and Copi Hollow.

WaterNSW staff have advised the hot weather forecast by the Bureau of Meteorology for the region and declining flows in the Darling-Baaka would likely increase the risk of high levels of algae growth, especially in the lower end of the system.
