Church of Christ’s 134th anniversary

ON Saturday, December 14, Broken Hill’s Church of Christ will have its 134 anniversary.

The milestone will be celebrated on Sunday, December 15, with a guest speaker from the NSW Conference of the Churches of Christ and a morning tea.

The Church’s Pastor, Mark Curtis said the Broken Hill experience is unique.

“We exist in a twilight zone between three states, being in NSW, yet playing AFL derived from Victoria and having SA time,” he said.

“No single state group of the Churches of Christ sponsored a new congregation here, it was the Federal Conference of Churches of Christ that planted a congregation here, with the first meeting held in the YMCA Hall.

“Broken Hill has always attracted and bred great characters, and one such character was Edward J. Tuck.”

Pastor Tuck was one of the first pastors in the town and officiated around 3000 burials and 2000 marriages, preaching in the region for 34 years.

Today, the Church’s pastors are Herb Netherclift and Mr Curtis.
